Description: Not a good day (Shakku赤口), from the series Kuniyoshi's Analogies for the Six Conditions of Nature (Rokuyosei Kuniyoshi jiman 六様性国芳自慢). Published by Uoya Heikichi in October 1860. This series pairs mythical and historic people with auspicious and inauspicious days in Japanese astrology. Here officer ōmori Hikoshichi (大森彦七 in service of Ashikaga no Takauji 1305-1358) is crouching at a riverbed. After the victory at the battle of Minatogawa in 1336, he offers to take this beautiful woman across the river on his back. Doing so her true demonic identy is reflected in the water’s surface.
